The intended completion date is now 20th August. We are excited and relieved, but we will have to let the notaire sign for us as we cannot get over until the week after. The timing means that we will take possession just a few days before my 50th birthday, which is pretty fantastic.
The plan is to go over and ‘camp’ with sleeping bags and inflatable mattresses for a few days. It’s one way to find out if the toilet works(!), and it will help prepare me for the weeks that I go over alone to get the repairs etc underway. Now the sleepless nights will start, as I start to panic about whether Baz will see potential in the building or be disappointed, and if it is as I remember it…..
Oh oh oh, you are just getting started. I think I am just about to finish, unless the house finishes me, first. Best of luck. Will you have to stay there while you renovate? Friends who have done that tell me the key to survival — mainly of your marriage — is to make sure you have one room, probably your bedroom, that is clean and civilized. No matter what, the blog is a smart survival tool. I have found that it gives me a sense of progress in what would otherwise just be a long, expensive slog. Will it eventually be worth it to me? Dunno. Ask me in a year. I’m looking forward to following your progress.

Hadn’t even thought of things like nails! Luckily there are lots of tiled rooms. I hadn’t even thought about the heat, but I hope we can buy a cheap fan locally. Really appreciate the advice x

make sure you check for nails in the floorboards under your mattresses! we didn’t and spent many a night reinflating and cursing!
Ps in August you probably won’t need any sleeping bags but will be lying there hot and sleepless wishing you had a fan!
